Video: How to Sample Hay Bales for Nutritive Value Analysis

— Written By

Hay is defined as forage conserved under aerobic dry or limited moisture conditions. Hay is critical to feed livestock during periods of shortage caused by limited pasture growth or inadequate pasture conditions, or when fed as a supplement (for example, when supplementing with a legume).

The following videos explain the appropriate way to sample hay bales and how to prepare a sample to be sent for laboratory analysis.

For further information about hay production and selecting hay to feed different types of livestock, see publications AG-803 and AG-824 and contact your local NC State Extension office.
